The Ultimate Hot Air Balloon Ride FAQ

Everything You Need to Know Before You Fly

Thinking about booking a hot air balloon ride in Australia but not quite sure what to expect?

You’re not alone. From “How safe is hot air ballooning?” and “What time do flights take off?” to “How much does a hot air balloon ride cost?” and “What happens if the weather is bad?”, these are some of the most common questions we hear from first-time passengers.

Hot air ballooning is one of Australia’s most iconic bucket-list experiences, offering a unique way to experience sunrise high above vineyards, coastlines, rolling countryside and remote outback landscapes. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, celebrating a birthday or anniversary, looking for the perfect gift, or simply wanting to try something new, it’s natural to have questions before you fly.

In this guide, we’ve answered the most frequently asked questions about hot air ballooning in Australia, including flight times, pricing, safety, accessibility, weather policies and what to expect on the day. With more than 45 years of experience operating hot air balloon flights across Australia, we’re here to help you feel informed, confident and excited about your adventure.

General Information

Is Hot Air Ballooning Weather Dependent?

Yes. Unlike many other tourism experiences, hot air ballooning relies heavily on suitable weather conditions.

Our pilots carefully monitor forecasts leading up to every flight to ensure conditions are safe for both passengers and crew. If strong winds, poor visibility, rain, or other unsuitable conditions are expected, the flight may need to be postponed.

You’ll receive a flight status update via SMS and email the evening before your scheduled experience. If your flight is cancelled due to weather, there’s no need to worry. You’ll be able to reschedule for another available date within the validity period of your ticket or voucher.

How Does a Hot Air Balloon Actually Fly?

The science behind hot air ballooning is surprisingly simple.

When air is heated, it becomes lighter than the cooler air surrounding it. By warming the air inside the balloon envelope using powerful propane burners, the balloon becomes buoyant and gently lifts off the ground.

Throughout the flight, the pilot controls altitude by adjusting the temperature inside the balloon. Adding heat causes the balloon to rise, while allowing the air to cool gradually brings it back down.

By changing altitude, pilots can often access different wind currents travelling in slightly different directions, helping guide the balloon’s journey across the landscape.

How Many People Fit in a Hot Air Balloon?

Many first-time guests are surprised by how spacious modern balloon baskets can be.

Balloon Aloft operates a fleet of balloons ranging from intimate two-passenger flights through to larger balloons capable of carrying up to 24 passengers.

On a shared flight, the number of people onboard will vary depending on bookings for that day. Baskets are divided into separate standing compartments, allowing everyone to enjoy clear views and plenty of space throughout the flight.

The compartment design ensures passengers can comfortably stand facing outward, providing uninterrupted views of the scenery below.

What Time Do Balloon Flights Start?

Hot air balloon flights take place around sunrise, when atmospheric conditions are generally at their calmest and most stable.

While you’ll spend approximately 50-60 minutes in the air, the overall experience is much more than the flight itself. Guests should allow around four hours from arrival through to the conclusion of the morning.

This includes check-in, safety briefings, transport to the launch site, balloon inflation, the flight itself, landing, pack-down activities, breakfast and return transfers where applicable.

What Time Will We Be Finished?

Most sunrise ballooning experiences finish between 8:00am and 10:00am, although exact timing can vary depending on the season, weather conditions and location.

Because every flight is unique, your pilot and crew will provide more accurate timing the afternoon before your flight, based on the weather forecast.

Many guests love the fact that the experience finishes early enough to enjoy the rest of their day exploring wineries, beaches, restaurants or local attractions.

Why Do Flights Take Place at Sunrise?

Sunrise offers the best flying conditions for hot air balloons.

During the early morning hours, winds are typically lighter and more predictable, while temperatures are cooler and the atmosphere is more stable. These conditions help create smoother flights and greater operational flexibility for pilots.

As an added bonus, passengers are treated to spectacular sunrise views that simply can’t be replicated later in the day.

Is Hot Air Ballooning Scary?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from first-time flyers.

The reality is that hot air ballooning feels far gentler than most people expect. Because the balloon moves with the wind, there’s very little sensation of speed or movement.

Unlike flying in an aeroplane, there is no turbulence, sharp turns, or sudden acceleration. Most passengers describe the experience as peaceful, calm and surprisingly relaxing.

Even guests who are nervous beforehand often say their concerns disappear within minutes of take-off.

How High Do Hot Air Balloons Fly?

Every flight is different.

Depending on weather conditions and the route chosen by your pilot, you may find yourself floating just above the treetops one moment and thousands of feet above the landscape the next.

Flights can reach heights of up to 4,000 feet, providing spectacular panoramic views while also allowing pilots to utilise different wind currents throughout the journey.

Is a Hot Air Balloon Ride Worth It?

For many people, a hot air balloon flight becomes one of the most memorable experiences of their lives.

Rather than simply being a sightseeing activity, it combines adventure, aviation, breathtaking scenery, sunrise views, professional flight operations and a celebratory breakfast into one unforgettable morning.

It’s also why balloon flights are regularly chosen for proposals, anniversaries, milestone birthdays, family celebrations and once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences.

Safety & Health

Do You Need To Be Fit To Go Hot Air Ballooning?

You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy a hot air balloon ride, but there are some physical requirements that all passengers should be aware of.

Guests should be able to climb into the balloon basket using the built-in footholds, remain standing for approximately one hour during the flight, and adopt the landing position when instructed by the pilot.

While many landings are extremely gentle, some may involve a small bump or short drag before the basket comes to a stop. For this reason, passengers should be reasonably mobile and able to absorb a minor impact similar to stepping down from a low chair.

If you have significant knee, hip, back or neck issues, have recently undergone surgery, suffered a broken bone, or have any medical condition that may affect your ability to follow safety instructions, it’s worth speaking with the reservations team before booking. An Accessible flight in the Hunter Valley may be the best option for you.

There is no upper age limit for ballooning. Many guests well into their senior years enjoy hot air balloon flights every year. What’s most important is your mobility and overall fitness rather than your age.

What Is The Minimum Age For A Hot Air Balloon Flight?

Hot air ballooning is an unforgettable family experience, but there are minimum age requirements in place for safety and comfort.

Children must be at least seven years old to fly and should be accompanied by a responsible adult. They must also be tall enough to comfortably see over the edge of the basket, which generally means a minimum height of around 120cm.

Parents should also consider that the burners used to heat the balloon can be loud at times, which some younger children may find overwhelming.

Can People Living With Disabilities Or Limited Mobility Fly?

Balloon Aloft is proud to offer one of Australia’s most accessible ballooning experiences.

While traditional balloon baskets require passengers to climb over the side using footholds, the specially designed accessible basket in the Hunter Valley features a door for easier entry and exit.

The basket includes seating and harnessing options and has been designed to accommodate wheelchair users and passengers with limited mobility. A wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus is also available to assist guests throughout the experience.

If you’re unsure whether ballooning is suitable for your individual needs, it’s always worth contacting the team to discuss the available options.

Can You Fly While Pregnant?

Unfortunately, hot air ballooning is not recommended during pregnancy.

Although flights are typically smooth and gentle, the landing phase can occasionally involve unexpected movement or impact. Because passenger safety is always the top priority, pregnant guests are unable to participate in balloon flights.

Is There A Weight Limit?

For safety reasons, balloon baskets have manufacturer-specified weight limits that must be followed.

Adult passengers must weigh less than 140kg, while children must not exceed the designated child weight limit.

These limits are not arbitrary. Every balloon flight requires detailed weight and balance calculations to ensure the aircraft operates safely and performs as intended.

Why Do You Need My Weight When I Book?

Some guests are surprised when asked for their weight during the booking process, but this information plays an important role in flight planning.

Hot air balloons have a maximum lifting capacity, and pilots calculate the total weight of passengers, equipment and fuel before every flight.

Providing an accurate weight helps the flight crew correctly balance the balloon and maintain the highest safety standards.

How Safe Is Hot Air Ballooning?

Hot air ballooning is one of the oldest forms of aviation and operates under strict aviation regulations in Australia.

Balloon Aloft has been flying passengers since 1980 and is recognised as Australia’s most experienced hot air balloon operator. Every flight is conducted under the regulations of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), with safety guiding every operational decision.

Weather conditions, passenger wellbeing and aircraft performance are continuously assessed before and during every flight.

Are Balloon Pilots Qualified?

Absolutely.

Every Balloon Aloft pilot holds a commercial pilot licence issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Becoming a commercial balloon pilot requires extensive training, flight experience and ongoing competency checks. Pilots must meet strict aviation standards and maintain their qualifications through regular assessments and operational requirements.

When you fly with Balloon Aloft, you’re flying with highly trained aviation professionals.

Am I Covered By Insurance?

Yes.

Your balloon flight includes passenger insurance coverage, and there are no additional insurance fees payable on the day of your flight.

Balloon Aloft carries Air Carriers Liability Insurance, which includes cover for passengers while participating in the experience.

What If I’m Afraid Of Heights?

This is one of the most common concerns first-time passengers have, and in reality, it rarely becomes an issue once you’re airborne.

Unlike standing on a building edge or looking down from a lookout platform, a hot air balloon doesn’t create the same sensation of height or vertigo.

Because the balloon moves with the wind, there’s no feeling of rushing through the air. Instead, the experience feels calm, stable and almost dreamlike.

Many guests who describe themselves as afraid of heights tell us afterwards that ballooning felt far more comfortable than they expected.

Can You Sit Down During A Balloon Flight?

On most standard flights, passengers remain standing throughout the journey to enjoy uninterrupted views and maintain the correct position for take-off and landing.

However, Balloon Aloft’s accessible basket in the Hunter Valley includes seating and harnessing options for eligible passengers, making the experience available to a wider range of guests.

If you require seating during the flight, contact the team before booking so the most suitable options can be discussed.

Bookings & Payments

How Much Does A Hot Air Balloon Ride Cost?

The price of a hot air balloon experience can vary depending on the location, day of the week and the type of ticket you choose.

At Balloon Aloft, flights currently (June 2026) start from $299 for adults and $285 for children. Some packages include additional extras such as accommodation transfers or flexible booking options, which can affect the overall price.

While ballooning is often considered a premium experience, many guests view it as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that combines aviation, sightseeing, sunrise views and breakfast into a single memorable morning.

What’s Included In The Ticket Price?

Your booking includes much more than just the flight itself.

Most Balloon Aloft experiences include:

  • A sunrise hot air balloon flight
  • Professional pilot and ground crew support
  • A celebratory breakfast after landing
  • Digital photos from your experience
  • Carbon offsetting for your flight

Depending on the package selected, return transfers from your accommodation may also be included.

Every location offers a slightly different experience, so it’s always worth checking the details of your chosen flight package before booking.

How Do I Book A Hot Air Balloon Flight?

Booking your flight is simple and can be completed online in just a few minutes.

Guests can browse available dates, compare flight options and secure their preferred experience through the Balloon Aloft website.

Because balloon flights have limited passenger numbers, popular dates can sell out well in advance, particularly during weekends, public holidays and peak travel periods.

Can I Buy A Gift Voucher?

Absolutely.

Hot air balloon flights remain one of Australia’s most popular experience gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, retirements and Christmas presents.

Balloon Aloft gift vouchers can be redeemed across all operating locations and are valid for up to three years from the date of purchase, giving recipients plenty of flexibility when planning their adventure.

Many guests purchase vouchers months in advance and allow the recipient to choose their preferred location and travel date.

Can I Change My Flight Date?

Life happens, and plans sometimes change.

If you need to move your booking, Balloon Aloft allows flight dates to be changed up to 72 hours before your scheduled departure time, subject to availability and ticket conditions.

If Balloon Aloft cancels your flight due to unsuitable weather, you’ll be able to select a new date within the validity period of your ticket or voucher.

What Happens If I Need To Cancel?

Cancellation policies vary depending on the amount of notice provided and the type of ticket purchased.

If you decide not to proceed with your booking, cancellation fees may apply. Cancellations are not accepted within 72 hours of your scheduled flight time.

Because ballooning is a weather-dependent activity with limited passenger capacity, these policies help ensure operational planning remains fair for all guests.

Before booking, it’s always a good idea to review the latest cancellation terms that apply to your chosen ticket type.

What If The Flight Is Cancelled Due To Weather?

Weather is one of the few factors that cannot be controlled when it comes to hot air ballooning.

If conditions are unsuitable for a safe flight, Balloon Aloft may postpone or cancel the experience. In these situations, guests can choose to rebook for another available date.

Guests travelling on Flexi Tickets may also be eligible for a full refund, while gift vouchers and flight vouchers remain non-refundable.

The reservations team will provide all available options should weather impact your booking.

Do Balloon Flights Operate On Weekends And Public Holidays?

Yes.

In most locations Flights operate seven days a week throughout most of the year, including weekends and many public holidays, provided weather conditions are suitable.

The only regular exceptions are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Weekend flights are particularly popular, so early booking is recommended if you have a specific date in mind.

Are Group Discounts Available?

Planning a celebration, family gathering, corporate event or special occasion?

Groups of eight or more passengers may be eligible for discounted pricing. In many cases, the discount is automatically applied during the online booking process, making it easy to organise larger bookings.

Ballooning is a popular choice for milestone birthdays, team events, reunions and social groups looking to share a unique experience together.

What Payment Methods Do You Accept?

Balloon Aloft offers a variety of payment options to make booking as convenient as possible.

Accepted payment methods include:

  • Visa

Alternatively, if you would like to book over the phone, we can send you a payment link for you to make payment with your preferred instalment payment type.

How Far In Advance Should I Book?

The earlier, the better.

While last-minute availability does occasionally arise, flights can book out weeks or even months ahead during busy periods.

Advance booking is particularly important if you’re planning:

  • A weekend flight
  • An exclusive or private flight
  • An accessible balloon flight
  • A proposal or special event
  • A large group booking

Booking early gives you the widest choice of dates and helps avoid disappointment.

Are There Any Hidden Fees?

No.

The advertised ticket price includes the core elements of your ballooning experience, and there are no surprise charges added on the day of your flight.

Transparency is important, which is why all pricing and booking conditions are clearly outlined before you complete your purchase.

Is Hot Air Ballooning Worth The Investment?

For many travellers, a hot air balloon ride becomes one of the highlights of their trip.

It’s not simply a sightseeing activity. It’s an early morning adventure that combines breathtaking scenery, professional aviation, memorable photo opportunities and a unique perspective that very few people ever experience.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or ticking off a lifelong bucket-list item, many guests say the memories created during a balloon flight stay with them long after they’ve landed.

Exclusive Flights

What’s The Difference Between A Private And Shared Flight?

On a shared flight, you’ll fly alongside other passengers enjoying the same experience.

A private flight is reserved exclusively for you and your guests, creating a more personal and memorable experience from take-off to landing.

Can I Propose In A Hot Air Balloon?

Absolutely. A hot air balloon flight is one of the most unique and romantic ways to propose, combining breathtaking scenery, sunrise views and an unforgettable setting.

Many guests choose to pop the question during the flight, while others prefer to propose after landing or during the post-flight celebration.

Do You Offer Proposal Packages?

Yes. Balloon Aloft offers proposal packages at selected locations to help make the moment even more special.

Our Ultimate Proposal Package includes romantic touches such as a red carpet, candles and a light-up “Will You Marry Me?” sign. Guests booking a Romantic Flight for Two may also have access to a complimentary proposal banner.

Are Private Flights Only For Proposals?

Not at all.

Exclusive flights are also popular for anniversaries, birthdays, honeymoons, retirement celebrations and family milestones. They’re ideal for anyone wanting a more personalised experience while enjoying Australia’s spectacular sunrise scenery from above.

The Day of the Flight

Where Do We Meet?

Meeting locations vary depending on where you’re flying. Popular meeting points include local wineries, hotels and visitor centres across our operating regions-

Hunter Valley – Peterson House Winery

Mudgee – Clairfield Hotel

Camden – Camden Valley Inn

Byron Bay – The Farm Byron Bay

Burketown (Moungibi) – Burketown Visitors Centre

Before your flight, you’ll receive detailed instructions with your exact meeting location addresses and arrival time. We recommend arriving a little early to allow time for check-in and your pre-flight briefing.

What Should I Wear?

Comfort is key when it comes to ballooning.

We recommend wearing casual clothing, closed-toe shoes and dressing in layers. Early mornings can be cool before sunrise, but temperatures often warm up quickly once the sun is up.

Avoid high heels, sandals or footwear that may be difficult to walk in on uneven ground. Remember this is an adventure activity so wear something you aren’t afraid to get a little dirty.

Is Transport Provided?

Yes. After meeting your pilot and crew, you’ll be transported to the launch site and returned after the flight.

In selected locations, flight packages with accommodation transfers are also available, making the experience even more convenient.

What Happens Before Take-Off?

One of the most exciting parts of the morning is watching the balloon come to life.

After arriving at the launch site, you’ll see the crew lay out the balloon and begin the inflation process using cold air and then heating that air using the burner. This usually takes around 25 to 30 minutes and provides some fantastic photo opportunities before the flight even begins.

How Long Does The Experience Last?

While the flight itself typically lasts around 50 to 60 minutes, guests should allow approximately four hours for the entire experience.

This includes check-in, safety briefings, transport, balloon inflation, the flight, landing, pack-down and the post-flight breakfast celebration.

How High And How Far Will We Fly?

Every flight is different, which is part of the magic of ballooning.

Depending on conditions, your pilot may fly just above the treetops or climb to heights of up to 4,000 feet. The distance travelled depends entirely on the wind speed and direction on the day.

Is It Very Cold In A Hot Air Balloon?

Surprisingly, not really. It’s no colder than it is on the ground.

Although you’re flying high above the ground, the warmth from the burners overhead often offsets any small temperature drop at altitude.

Dressing for the early morning conditions and wearing layers is usually the best approach.

What Does The Flight Feel Like?

Many first-time passengers expect the sensation to be similar to an aeroplane, but ballooning is much gentler.

Once airborne, you’ll slowly drift with the breeze, creating a calm and peaceful experience with very little sensation of movement. There is no turbulence, and the basket remains remarkably stable throughout the flight.

Can Pilots Control Where The Balloon Goes?

Unlike other aircraft, a hot air balloon doesn’t have a steering wheel or other means of steerage.

Instead, pilots control altitude to access different wind currents that may be travelling in different directions. By moving between these air currents, they can influence the balloon’s path and guide it towards a suitable landing area.

What Is The Landing Like?

There are two typical sorts of landings.

Some are upright touch-downs, while others involve a drag before the basket comes to a stop, either upright or on its side. Both are completely normal and safe. Your pilot will guide you through the landing position beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

Do We Land Where We Took Off?

Not usually.

Because balloons travel with the wind, the landing site is often several kilometres from where the flight began. This is all part of the adventure and why a ground crew follows the balloon throughout the journey.

What Happens After We Land?

Once you’ve landed, the ground crew will meet the balloon and assist with the pack-down process.

Guests are welcome to get involved and help deflate the balloon, or simply stand back, take photos and watch the process unfold. If conditions allow, you will also be able to climb inside the balloon at this stage.

Many passengers enjoy seeing this behind-the-scenes part of the experience.

Is There A Celebration Afterwards?

Yes, and for many guests it’s the perfect way to finish the morning.

After the flight, you’ll enjoy a celebratory breakfast at a local venue. Depending on the location and venue, some experiences may also include a sparkling wine toast to mark your adventure.

By the time breakfast wraps up, you’ll have watched the sunrise, floated above stunning scenery and ticked off a truly unforgettable bucket-list experience.

Miscellaneous

Can I Bring My Phone Or Camera?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your phone or camera to capture photos and videos during the flight.

We simply ask that phones remain on Airplane Mode and that calls are not taken during the experience out of consideration for other passengers.

Can I Bring A Drone?

No. Drones are not permitted during balloon operations as they can create safety risks for aircraft and passengers.

Can I Bring My Dog Or Pet?

Unfortunately not. The noise from the burners and nature of the flight can be stressful for animals, so pets should be left safely at home.

Can We Fly Over My House Or Choose Where We Land?

Hot air balloons travel with the wind, which means the exact flight path and landing location cannot be guaranteed in advance.

While pilots can change altitude to access different wind currents, the final route will always depend on the weather conditions on the day. This means every balloon flight is slightly different, making each experience unique.

A hot air balloon flight is more than just a sightseeing experience. It’s a chance to slow down, watch the world wake up beneath you, and experience Australia from a completely different perspective.

For many guests, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list experience. For others, it’s the perfect way to celebrate a proposal, anniversary, birthday, retirement, family holiday or special milestone. Whatever brings you to ballooning, our goal is to make the experience as memorable, seamless and enjoyable as possible from the moment you arrive until the final breakfast celebration.

We hope this guide has answered your questions and helped you feel ready for your flight. If there’s anything we haven’t covered, our friendly reservations team is always happy to help.

Now all that’s left to do is set your alarm early, watch the sunrise, and enjoy one of the most unforgettable views in Australia
